MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Oregon’s defense delivered a dominant performance on the national stage.
No. 5 Oregon forced four turnovers and recorded a shutout to blank No. 4 Texas Tech 23-0 on Thursday afternoon in the Capital One Orange Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium with over 60,000 in attendance.
The Ducks (13-1) advanced to the College Football Playoff semifinals, where they will face the winner of the Rose Bowl matchup between No. 9 Alabama and No. 1 Indiana in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on Jan. 9.
Texas Tech (12-2) won the coin toss and deferred, but struggled to find any rhythm offensively against an Oregon defense that consistently applied pressure and capitalized on mistakes.
Oregon quarterback Dante Moore moved the Ducks early, connecting with Jamari Johnson and tight end Kenyon Sadiq for first downs. A deep shot to Malik Benson fell incomplete after defensive back Amir Boyd broke up the pass, and Texas Tech’s defense held Oregon to a 50-yard field goal by Atticus Sappington for a 3-0 lead.
The Ducks forced a quick three-and-out and continued to control field position, though drives stalled on both sides. Texas Tech linebacker David Bailey and defensive tackle Lee Hunter helped stop Oregon on fourth down, while Red Raiders quarterback Behren Morton was pressured into errant throws and sacks.
Morton’s first major mistake came late in the first quarter, when he threw an interception to defensive back Brandon Finney Jr. Oregon again failed to convert the takeaway into points, but the Ducks remained in control.
Oregon extended its lead to 6-0 in the second quarter after Finney recovered a Texas Tech fumble deep in Red Raiders territory, setting up Sappington’s 39-yard field goal. The Ducks took that advantage into halftime after holding Texas Tech scoreless through two quarters.
On a key fourth-and-3 in the second quarter, punter James Ferguson-Reynolds threw an 11-yard completion to defensive lineman Teitum Tuioti to move the chains. The conversion extended the drive, which ended in a field goal and helped Oregon secure a 23–0 win.
The turning point came early in the third quarter.
Defensive end Matayo Uiagalelei strip-sacked Morton and recovered the fumble, giving Oregon a short field. Running back Jordon Davison capitalized moments later with a 6-yard touchdown run — the only touchdown of the game — pushing the Ducks’ lead to 13-0.
Texas Tech threatened later in the third quarter with completions to Reggie Virgil and Terrance Carter Jr., but the Red Raiders were stopped again on fourth-and-short. On their next possession, Morton threw his second interception of the night — and Finney’s second of the game — this one in the end zone.
Moore responded with a key completion to Jayden Limar for 27 yards, setting up Sappington’s third field goal, a 50-yarder, to make it 16-0.
The Ducks sealed the win by continuing to pressure Morton, recording multiple sacks on fourth down and preventing any late comeback attempt.
Oregon got it to the Raiders 1-yard line following a defensive personal foul penalty and Davison was able to run it in to increase their lead to 22-0 after a made extra point by Sappington.
It was not a flashy offensive performance, but Oregon’s defense dominated throughout, forcing four turnovers and pitching a shutout to send the Ducks to the College Football Playoff semifinals.
Game notes
Oregon held Texas Tech to 78 yards rushing on 38 carries for an average of 2.6 yards per carry.
Moore was named the Orange Bowl’s MVP after going 26 of 33 with 234 yards passing.
It marked the first time the Red Raiders have been shut out in a full game since 2005 and made them only the third team in the history of the CFP to be held scoreless in a game.
