West Broward Bobcats get historic sendoff to state semifinals

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — West Broward High School’s football team received a roaring, surprise sendoff Thursday as they departed for the state semifinals — the first appearance in school history.

The celebration came days after the Bobcats’ dramatic, last-minute win over Southridge.

“When we came out with 23 seconds left, we knew West Broward was going to the final four,” head coach Brian McCartney said.

Fans and families lined the walkway as the band played and players marched to their buses.

“It was awesome to come through there with the band playing and the fans cheering,” running backs coach Terrence Miller said.

The win has energized the entire campus.

“All the doors opening for this school and this program is crazy,” said Michelle Ion, Booster Club president.

From an 0–2 start to a Final Four berth, McCartney says his team knows the job isn’t done. The Bobcats face top-seeded Buchholz on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Gainesville, hoping school spirit fuels another historic victory.
