PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — Public Counsel Walt Trierweiler spoke to Local 10’s Glenna Milberg on This Week in South Florida Sunday about the controversial rate hike from Power and Light, which is set to take effect despite widespread public opposition.
The new bill passed in the legislature this week requires the Public Service Commission to consider affordability before approving rate hikes.
Trierweiler explained that the issue of affordability was raised during the latest case involving FPL, but the commission ruled it couldn’t be considered because it wasn’t in the statute.
The bill also proposes expanding the Public Service Commission from five to seven members and adding a CPA and a financial analyst to the board.
Trierweiler, who leads the State Office of Public Counsel, acknowledged the challenge, but emphasized the difficulty of the current situation.
