Why BMW and Mercedes made cheap cars that failed and why they keep trying

German brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi built their reputations on being purveyors of precise engineering cars, luxurious interiors, cutting-edge technology, and above all, pretty high sticker prices. In their quest to grow volumes and reach a broader chunk of the new car market, brands that once catered to the higher end of the American auto market are churning out smaller and cheaper models. But some such bets, including the compact BMW 318ti compact and the Mercedes-Benz 320 sport coupe did not last. Even Volkswagen Group can separate its Volkswagen cars, meant more for the average buyers, from its pricier Audi and Porsche brands. But Mercedes-Benz and BMW have no separate mainstream brands.

How Audi went from pariah to BMW and Mercedes rival

From the 1980s to the late 2010s, Audi went from being an also-ran among German luxury car brands to a serious rival to BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Now it is recovering from a few recent stumbles and is trying to transform itself for a new era of electrification. It is also part of a product overhaul the brand has been promising since top brass acknowledged a brief slump in sales. "We are currently in a challenging phase," said Audi CEO Bram Schot in the company's 2018 annual report. In the 1980s Audi was severely tainted by an unintended acceleration scandal that sent sales crashing.

Station wagons struggle for a comeback in the US as European automakers add luxury touches

The wagon is a piece of automotive Americana, but these days it has almost entirely vanished from U.S. roads. Some European automakers, however, still roll the dice on U.S. buyers with high-end wagons wrapped in leather and, in some cases, boasting big engines with more than 400 horsepower. But in terms of choice, most U.S. wagons are from European automakers, such as Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo. Wagons sell far better in Europe than they do in the U.S., where buyers value the combination of sedan-like driving dynamics and the added space. The wagons these companies do sell in the U.S. make up a fraction of a percent of U.S. new car sales.
