BSO makes dozens of arrests, recovers more than $4.3 million worth of stolen vehicles
Authorities say thieves who are part of a large crime ring are hunting for high-end vehicles, like Mercedes-Benzes, Range Rovers and other pricey cars. The thieves disable tracking devices, change VIN’s and sell the vehicles to locations across the state and country, deputies say. According to BSO, the BAT Unit made 174 arrests in 2020 and recovered 69 stolen vehicles. The total value of the stolen vehicles recovered last year was more than $4.3 million. “In recent months, the BAT Unit has solved dozens of cases.
Broward doctor sent explicit photos to teen, detectives say
PARKLAND, Fla. – A South Florida doctor was arrested Tuesday morning after detectives say he sent sexually explicit pictures of himself to a 13-year old. Stewart Bitman, 64, of Parkland, is accused of knowing the victim was 13 and allegedly portrayed himself as a teenage boy. Broward Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children detectives say they obtained information that in early April, Bitman “sent a number of sexual text messages and nude photos of himself” to the 13-year-old child. A search warrant was executed at Bitman’s home Tuesday morning, which involved BSO SWAT team members, investigators say. Detectives are asking anyone with information regarding Bitman’s case or anyone whose child may have been a victim of Bitman’s to contact BSO ICAC Detective Jennifer Montgomery at 954-888-5290.
Homicide detectives investigating after woman’s body found inside Dania Beach hotel room
DANIA BEACH, Fla. – Police are investigating after finding a woman’s unresponsive body inside a Dania Beach hotel room. Authorities were still in the process of clearing the scene Tuesday afternoon after gathering evidence from the hotel. Local 10 has learned it was an employee at the Four Points Hotel on Sterling Road who discovered the body. Others staying at the hotel found themselves unable to get back to their rooms after crime scene technicians began their investigation. BSO Fire Rescue debuts new, live-saving helicopters with state of the art technology
POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – BSO Fire Rescue has a new tool it is using to help the public and save lives. Local 10 News got an exclusive look at their upgraded EMS rescue helicopters. Meeting up at Pompano Beach Air Park, BSO showed Local 10 what the twin Eurocopter EC135 helicopters can do. The EMS helicopters are also carrying whole blood, which is usually only available in trauma centers. The Firestars also feature state of the art rescue equipment on the outside of the aircraft, such as the Night Sun search light and the Fleer camera.

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – An arsonist dressed in garbage bags and wearing goggles torched their way into a gate at a Waste Pro facility, then caused millions of dollars worth of damage by setting garbage trucks and lighting a bottle of clear liquid inside a building to start a blaze. After getting into the facility, the person roamed along the compound where BSO’s Violent Crimes detectives said it appeared that they were walking behind garbage trucks with what looked like a gas canister. The next destination was near the front gate, where several other trucks were set ablaze. Elizabeth Tibari, who lives across the street from Waste Pro, said the explosion was so intense that it blew out one of her windows. Teen used 5 children, their backpacks, to help her shoplift from mall, deputies say
PLANTATION, Fla. – A Fort Lauderdale teen was arrested for grand theft and other charges after allegedly using five children to help her steal from the Westfield Broward shopping mall. The group then went to the men’s department where the LPO saw Scott picking out clothing and multiple packs of Tommy Hilfiger men’s underwear. She again gave the merchandise to the children, who put some of the items in their backpacks but also openly carried some of the nearly $1,000 worth of goods throughout the store. The LPO said Scott, along with the children, passed by cashier areas without paying, and then walked out of the store. BSO said they were returned to their parents and Scott was taken to jail.
South Florida corrections officers, inmates growing concerned about lack of safety in prisons as COVID-19 cases spike
Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony said 58 county inmates have tested positive since the pandemic began. "As of today, we have one inmate (currently in custody) that actually tested positive," Tony told Livingston. BSO told Local 10 that 760 of its employees have tested positive for COVID-19, 106 of which have recovered. 34 of the 58 have recovered and are also still in custody, while 22 of the positive inmates have since been released. One inmate has tested positive and another is pending results from a recent test.
Broward deputy claims reassignment is politically motivated, attorney says
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputy Ron Thurston, who was hired in 1999, claims his recent reassignment over a violation of the department’s social media policy and unbecoming conduct is politically motivated. Thurston’s attorney, Johnny McCray, said his client has been using his free time to campaign against Sheriff Gregory Tony and in support of his predecessor, Scott Israel. “I just think that it is fundamentally unfair for him to be singled out for making these comments,” McCray said. " “BSO in no way condones opinions or statements that discredit an individual or reflect poorly on our agency,” a BSO spokesperson said in a statement. The department’s social media policy says employees are prohibited from sharing content that could affect the morale of staff or the public’s perception of the agency.

Broward Sheriff Tony not focused on possible reinstatement of Scott Israel

Tony already wrote that the recommendation to reinstate his suspended predecessor Scott Israel has no bearing on his work or BSO operations. "I just want to get back and do what I was elected to do," said Israel after the recommendation was announced. The Senate rules committed will meet next month before the full Senate gets the final vote on whether to reinstate Israel. The Republican-led chamber will decide whether to support DeSantis and uphold Israel's suspension, or reinstate the suspended Israel, a Democrat, whom Broward voters elected.
