SUNRISE, Fla. — A deadly two-vehicle crash shut down all northbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike early Monday morning in Sunrise, authorities said.
The crash occurred shortly after 2 a.m. near Mile Marker 59, north of Sunrise Boulevard, involving a 2015 BMW 428i and a 2025 Nissan Rogue, according to investigators.
Authorities said the BMW was traveling north in the outside lane of the Turnpike and approached the Nissan, which was traveling ahead at a slower speed. The driver of the BMW was unable to avoid the vehicle, and the front of the BMW collided with the rear of the Nissan.
After the impact, they said the Nissan traveled onto the outside shoulder, struck a guardrail, then rolled over and came to rest on its roof in the outside center lane, facing north.
They said the BMW left the roadway and came to rest in a ditch off the outside shoulder.
A 31-year-old man from Fort Lauderdale, who was an occupant of the Nissan, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to investigators. The driver of the Nissan, a 67-year-old man from Fort Lauderdale, was transported to Broward Health Medical Center.
Authorities said the driver of the BMW, a 26-year-old woman from Pembroke Pines, was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
All northbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike were temporarily closed as crews worked the scene, forcing drivers to exit at Sunrise Boulevard. Traffic was diverted for several hours.
Authorities advised drivers to avoid the Turnpike between Sunrise Boulevard and Commercial Boulevard and to use Interstate 95 or U.S. 1 as alternate routes.
Editor’s note: Authorities initially told Local 10 News the crash occurred in Lauderhill but later updated its location to Sunrise. This story has been corrected.
