Sandbag distributions continue as Tropical Storm Nicole heads toward Florida’s east coast

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – With Tropical Storm Nicole strengthening as it threatens the Florida coast, Miami-Dade and Broward residents in flood-prone areas are preparing Wednesday.

Beach chairs have been secured, as well as other things that can fly away.

A Local 10 News crew was in Deerfield Beach Wednesday morning as waves crashed onto the shore and pier. Trees were already whipping hard back and forth.

The fishing pier in Deerfield Beach will be shut down until after Nicole passes.

City officials say they plan to assess any potential damage Thursday and if the structure is safe, the pier will reopen on Friday.

Sandbag distributions are continuing Wednesday in some cities.

At the North Miami Beach Fleet Maintenance Building, sandbags will be given away from 7 a.m. until noon.

The building is located at 1965 NE 151 Street.

Miami Beach’s drive-through distribution site at 2111 Collins Avenue is now open until 3 p.m. Wednesday or when the weather deteriorates.

Pembroke Pines will be holding two sandbag distribution events Wednesday. One is at Pembroke Pines Health Park from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The other is at William B. Armstrong/Spring Valley Park from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., as well.

All locations require people to show proof of residency and there will also be limits on the number of sandbags that are allowed to be taken per household.

The city of Deerfield Beach is asking residents to report any downed power lines throughout this storm.
