Volunteers transform foster homes into Christmas village

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — The Grinch made a special visit to His House Children’s Home. He didn’t come to steal Christmas, and he didn’t come alone.

Instead, he came to lend a green, furry hand, along with more than 200 volunteers, as they transformed residential foster homes into cozy cottages filled with holiday spirit.

His House Children’s Home, a faith-based nonprofit which provides safe, stable and loving homes for children in crisis, hosted its annual “Deck the Halls” event earlier this month.

Special guests, including Miami-Dade County Commissioner Marleine Bastien, the Miami Dolphins Wives Association and vocalists from the New World School of the Arts, set aside a Saturday to hang stockings, string lights and spread Christmas joy throughout the campus.

“This is the most heartwarming day of the year for us,” said Silvia Smith-Torres, executive director of His House Children’s Home. “To see volunteers of all ages come together to create beautiful, joy-filled spaces for our children, many of whom are experiencing a decorated home for the first time, is nothing short of miraculous.”

Each of the 16 foster homes received a festive makeover on the inside and outside. Christmas trees, wreaths and even Grinch décor adorned living rooms to create a warm and fun atmosphere for the children to celebrate the holidays.

Organizers tell Local 10 it was the most successful “Deck the Halls” event to date.

“You think you’re coming here to decorate a house, but really you’re helping build a memory these kids will keep forever,” expressed volunteer Jennifer Sanchez. “Seeing their faces light up is the best gift of the season.”
