MIAMI — In a city that moves fast, these women move together.
The club concept is straightforward: it’s cardio meets connection in an all-female space.
“It just provides a safe space and it allows you the chance to just connect,” said Makaila Wilson, who’s been walking with 10k Steps Miami since October.
“There’s a lack of all-female communities, especially a lot of Black women,” said Aaliyah Forman, who joined in September. “It’s an amazing experience.”
10K Steps Miami — an all-female walking club — meets every weekend in Downtown Miami. It has quickly turned a simple stroll into a citywide statement focused on fitness and networking.
“It started with just two friends going on a walk and then we invited more of our friends and before we knew it, we were starting a community,” said co-founder Josephine Lentner.
“We’re giving women an opportunity to meet in a safe space,” said co-founder Cassius Bythewood. “Build connections in a city like Miami which can be very difficult to meet new people and just provide a positive space.”
Word spread quickly and social media helped to expand the walking club, which now stretches block to block.
Security follows closely to help navigate the streets and make everyone feel comfortable. Then the music kicks in and the miles melt away.
Halfway through the route, the energy spikes into what regulars call a mini fitness party.
The real lift, however, happens in conversations along the way.
We saw basic introductions turn into plans and new friendships.
The goal now is growth — more neighborhoods, more women.
10K Steps Miami holds its weekly meetups on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. Participation is free, the space is women-only, and the starting point is Sixty Vines on Northeast Eighth Street.
