Family, friends hold vigil for teen killed while trying to grab onto moving truck

Candlelight vigil held for teen run over day before his 16th birthday

TAMARAC, Fla. – Family and friends gathered Monday night to say goodbye to a teenager who was killed the day before his 16th birthday.

About 100 people attended the candlelight vigil for Lasvillie Edwards Jr.

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives said the 15-year-old was riding his bicycle when he tried to grab ahold of a Broward County work truck Sunday in Tamarac. Edwards lost control of his bicycle as the truck was making a right-hand turn from State Road 7 onto Northwest 49th Street and fell underneath.

The driver of the truck remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators.

"He was a rider," Cosharia Jordan said of her cousin. "If he learned how to do stunts, he was going to keep doing it until he got it."

Much of the crowd arrived for the vigil on ATVs, dirt bikes and bicycles.

The teen's family and friends wanted to make sure he wasn't forgotten, singing "Happy Birthday." The vigil concluded with a balloon launch.

Traffic homicide detectives are still investigating.
