National Park Service closes Shark Valley temporarily over 2 wildfires

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Wildfires were burning on Sunday in the Florida Everglades in areas of Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and Collier counties, according to the Florida Forest Service.

The smoke was moving north and away from the metro areas, according to Local 10 News Weather Authority Meteorologist Jennifer Collins.

In northern Miami-Dade County, the FFS’s Everglades field unit responded to the 800-acre fire, and it was 30% contained on Sunday afternoon in the Everglades National Park.

The National Park Service reported temporarily closing Shark Valley while two wildfires, known as Chipmunk and Vulture, burned. The smoke was visible from Main Park Road and U.S. Highway 41.

Everglades field unit personnel also responded to a wildfire in southwestern Palm Beach County’s wildlife management area. The flames had burned 350 acres when crews contained 85%.

In western Collier County, a wildfire burned seven acres and was 95% contained near the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge. The FFS’s Caloosahatchee field unit responded.
