MIAMI – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Friday that the Nestlé Purina PetCare Company expanded a prescription dry dog food recall.

The company attributed the recall of the Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental to a production error by a supplier in the United States.

The error, according to the FDA, resulted in elevated levels of vitamin D, which can lead to kidney dysfunction due to toxicity.

The company asked customers to immediately stop feeding it to their dogs, and throw it away in a container where no other animals can get to it.
