Woman accused of stealing $500K from elderly relative in Hialeah extradited from Spain

HIALEAH, Fla. — A Miami-Dade fugitive captured in Spain in 2022 is spending the end of 2023 back in South Florida after authorities extradited her Monday.

Hadee Toledo was accused in 2021 of conspiring with her son, Italo Nelli, to steal from their then-93-year-old relative. Authorities arrested Nelli, then 19, in June of that year, while Toledo fled to Spain.

Spanish authorities arrested her the following summer and she had been awaiting extradition.

Prosecutors accused the mother-son pair of taking advantage of the victim, Manuel Toledo, after he was hospitalized for COVID-19 in August 2020.

Toledo forged the victim’s signature on a power-of-attorney document, using it to sell the victim’s Hialeah home, liquidate all of his bank accounts and flee from Florida, prosecutors alleged.

Authorities said Nelli witnessed the forgery and others did as well. The document was later notarized. Officials said Nelli received $5,000 and a Mercedes-Benz for helping his mother.

The value of all the lost items and property totaled more than $500,000, authorities said.

Prosecutors said Toledo also used the forged documents to place the victim in an assisted living facility against his will and had changed her name from Haidee Hidalgo Pena as she preyed on him.

According to court records, as his mother, now 52, awaited a return to South Florida to face charges, Nelli, now 22, pleaded guilty to a count of conspiracy to commit organized scheme to defraud in July 2022.

He received probation and withheld adjudication and was also ordered to pay $38,000 in restitution. A charge of elderly exploitation was dismissed as part of the plea.

Toledo, meanwhile, faces charges of elderly exploitation, organized scheme to defraud, conspiracy to commit organized scheme to defraud, forgery and fraudulent use of identification of a person 60 or older.

She wasn’t listed in jail records as of late Tuesday afternoon.
