RAIFORD, Fla. — Convicted killer Victor Tony Jones is scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection on Tuesday, 35 years after murdering a Miami couple.
The family of Jacob and Matilda “Dolly” Nestor plans to attend the execution. Local 10 News reporter Bridgette Matter sat down with their daughter.
The Nestors’ love story began in the 1940s as high school sweethearts.
“And right after high school, pretty much, he had to go into the war, World War II,” daughter Irene Fisher said. “So before he went, he married my mother.”
After the war, Jack and Dolly started their family.
“My brother was first and then I came,” Fisher said.
The couple moved from New York to Miami in the 1960s. Jack was an inventor and artist who created medical instruments for doctors. Their daughter says he had 16 patents.
The Nestors ran Nestor Engineering in the Wynwood neighborhood.
“And then if anybody needed a job, he would give them a job, but he would pay them daily,” Fisher said. “And that’s how Victor Jones came to his office.”
Jones did odd jobs for the couple. On Dec. 19, 1990, he robbed them.
He stabbed Dolly before stabbing Jack.
“He fought him off, this 20-year-old man, for like 20 minutes at least until he gave way. But before he did, he shot him,” Fisher said.
When police arrived, they found Jones still inside. “And they saw him sitting on the couch with my mother’s pocketbook in his lap and a bottle of whiskey,” Fisher recalled.
Jones survived the shooting. He was convicted and sentenced to death.
Three decades later, Jones, now 64, is set to be executed. Fisher plans to attend, saying it will bring closure.
Asked if she forgives him, she said, “Yes, I do. I do forgive him. I forgive him because it’s important for me to forgive him. I won’t forget it.”
Jones is slated to be the 13th inmate to be executed in Florida this year, marking a record year for executions.
