STARKE, Fla. — Victor Tony Jones was on death row for more than 30 years.
On Tuesday at 6 p.m., the 64-year-old was put to death by lethal injection.
Jones was convicted of killing Jacob and Matilda Nestor during a robbery in December 1990.
The married couple, in their 60s, owned Nestor Engineering in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood.
They gave Jones odd jobs around the business.
“My father even would have helped him, in the sense that he would have taken him in and start to train him to teach him about the mechanics and all that stuff,” said Irene Fisher, the victim’s daughter. “That’s the kind of guy that he was.”
Jones’ death was something that Fisher had been waiting for.
“I’m 76 years old, and I didn’t think I’d be alive to see it,” she said.
The couple’s son, Michael, died from cancer at 76 years old that was connected to being at the twin towers attack. He never got to see the death sentence carried out.
For Fisher, it’s a sense of closure.
According to prison officials, Jones woke up at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.
He met with his spiritual advisor and had his last meal.
Jones is the thirteenth execution in Florida this year, a record year for the state.
Florida leads the nation in executions this year, and more are on the calendar.
