Miami Police Chief Manny Morales said the shooter was known to officers. He was identified as 27-year-old Mason Triana.

According to police, officers were initially called to the area of Northwest 14th Avenue and 26th Street around 7 a.m. in reference to an abandoned vehicle.

Officers called a tow truck to remove the vehicle, and they cleared the scene.

“Minutes later, we received a gun detection report at the same location, somewhere in the middle of between 14th and 15th on 26th Street,” Morales told reporters at the scene. “Units immediately respond. Upon arrival, they see a vehicle that is riddled with bullets, and immediately they begin to receive shots.”

Police confirmed that the abandoned vehicle was the same car that was shot up. Neighbors said it was a black Mercedes-Benz.

Police said numerous rounds were fired at officers by Triana, who was armed with a high-powered rifle.

A male officer and a female officer were both shot in their legs -- one in their knee and one in their ankle, Morales confirmed.

According to police, both officers were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center by other officers. They are both listed in stable condition.

Helicopter and K-9 units responded to the scene after the shooting.

Local 10’s Trent Kelly was in the area as officers detained the driver of a pickup truck who an officer said was the brother of the suspected gunman.

The man was handcuffed and searched by officers before being placed in the back of a police vehicle.

Police said Triana, meanwhile, barricaded himself inside his own home.

Officers deployed a drone to check out the residence.

Morales said Triana exited the home at one point and fired at officers outside. Officers returned fire.

He eventually was found dead inside the home, but it’s unclear whether he was shot by police or took his own life.
