Suspect arrested after tourist badly beaten, robbed in Miami Beach

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — A man was arrested following a brutal beatdown in Miami Beach.

Surveillance video from the Sherbrooke Hotel off Ninth Street shows a man dressed in pink talking to a man in a black shirt.

Suddenly punches are thrown.

The victim is then seen on the ground, but the relentless blows to his face and kicks to his body continue.

Police have since identified the suspect as Cornelius Wedner.

More video shows what appears to be a robbery, with Wedner snatching the victims satchel before digging in his pockets to steal his phone.

Mitch Novick provided the hotel’s footage.

“I’ve seen a lot of crazy stuff, this is up there,” said Novick. “The guy really took a beating. Really unnecessary.”

The victim was identified as Mouhamed Leigh, a tourist visiting from Chicago.

According to Wedner’s arrest form, “while the victim was communicating with officers, his injuries to his jaw and mouth became worse to the point that the victim couldn’t move his mouth due to the pain.”

Police said Wedner ended up ditching the satchel in nearby bushes and left.

He was arrested soon after, along the 1200 block of Washington Avenue, after police said he tried to run away.

Wedner is facing several charges, including strong armed robbery and aggravated battery along with a probation violation.

He was taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he has since posted bond and is expected to be released sometime Monday night.
