November walk celebrates prostate cancer survivors, raises funds

MIAMI — Nearly 300,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. More than ten percent of that number will die from the disease.

It’s why ZERO Prostate Cancer, the leading national nonprofit dedicated to improving and saving lives, is hosting its annual ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk.

The event will celebrate prostate cancer survivors as well as raise awareness and critical funds for patients and their families. It takes place Saturday, Nov. 8, at Miami’s Tropical Park. Start time is 9 a.m. and Local 10’s Calvin Hughes will serve as the emcee.

“This event represents the true power of community,” said Courtney Bugler, President and CEO of ZERO Prostate Cancer. “As a daughter of a prostate cancer patient and a cancer survivor myself, I know how important it is to honor, connect, and support the millions of men and families who have been impacted by this disease.”

Prostate cancer affects groups of men differently.

Black men, for example, are almost twice as likely to be diagnosed and die from prostate cancer than white men. Prostate cancer is also the most common cancer diagnosis in veterans, with one-in-five veterans being diagnosed in their lifetime.

Since 2007, the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk has united 170,000 participants, collectively raising more than $32,000,000 toward education and life-saving support services.

In addition, the series has fueled $4,500,000 in community grants, empowering local organizations to enhance testing, education and support initiatives.

“I run in honor of all men, especially those we’ve lost to this disease,” said Kevin Taylor, a Run/Walk participant. “Being around fellow survivors and their families renews my appreciation for the support I was lucky enough to have during my journey, and it inspires me to do more. I’m honored to be part of this community.”
