BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — The Humane Society of Broward County isn’t just home to cats and dogs — it’s also caring for small pets like guinea pigs, including a wiggly one named Chico who’s looking for a forever home.
During a weekend visit, HSBC’s Cherie Wachter shared care tips for guinea pigs, emphasizing the importance of a balanced diet rich in leafy greens and vitamin C.
“Red peppers have vitamin C in them, and I think this is his favorite,” Wachter said as Chico happily munched on a snack. “It’s also important that they have an abundance of Timothy hay. The hay helps them with digestion and keeps their teeth properly filed down.”
Wachter said guinea pigs, like cats and dogs, should get annual veterinary checkups — and they should also be spayed or neutered.
“Someone had two, which turned into quite a few more,” Wachter said. “That’s why we have several at the shelter waiting to be adopted.”
The adoption fee for guinea pigs is $30, which includes sterilization. Wachter added that guinea pigs do well in pairs, calling it a “BOGO” adoption opportunity.
Alongside Chico, the shelter is also highlighting a dog named Moonlight — a three-year-old black German shepherd mix described as smart, energetic and affectionate.
“She likes to give kisses,” Wachter said. “If you’re looking for a dog that’s going to go on adventures with you and have fun, she’s the girl for you.”
