MIAMI — A 63-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after police say he erupted in anger over dinner at a Miami assisted living facility and then hurled a two-foot metal vase at another resident.
Miami police identified the man as Osvaldo Nieves, who they say became “enraged” when the facility ran out of soup during dinner at the facility, located on Northwest 43rd Place.
According to his arrest report, staff members told officers that Nieves began shouting, stood up from the table and grabbed a decorative metal flower vase from a side table.
He then threw it on the ground twice, the report stated.
When another male resident tried to step in to protect the two female employees, police say Nieves picked up the vase again and threw it at the resident twice — striking him once in the right side of the chest and again on his left leg.
The victim suffered a cut on his chest and a small puncture-type wound to his knee, the report stated.
According to police, the victim led Nieves toward a rear patio to protect the staff, and when Nieves continued to approach him, the victim punched him in the face.
Officers wrote that Nieves then returned to his bedroom and fell asleep. Employees at the assisted living facility told police that he frequently exhibits aggressive behavior.
Nieves was identified by the victim and witnesses and then transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital before before being taken into custody.
Authorities said no employees of the assisted living facility were hurt.
Jail records show Nieves is facing one count of aggravated battery on a person 65 years or older.
As of Friday afternoon, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bond was set at $7,500.
