FLORIDA CITY, Fla. — A Florida City mother was arrested Monday after police said they found her children living amid dog feces, hazardous clutter and more than a year of missed school while responding to a domestic violence call.
Officers with the Florida City Police Department said they were dispatched in emergency mode just before 9 a.m. to a home along Southwest Sixth Lane after an 8-year-old girl told dispatchers she heard her mother being struck.
When officers arrived, they made contact with Amy Angela Alfonso, her three children — ages 1, 8 and 10 — and the mother’s boyfriend, Edwin Rodriguez, who was taken into custody on a domestic battery charge, according to the report.
Inside the residence, officers reported a strong odor of dog feces and noted multiple piles on the living room carpet.
Upstairs, police said they found the two older children in a shared bedroom where trash, clothing, toys, food containers and other debris covered most of the floor, creating what officers described as “unsanitary and hazardous conditions.”
Investigators also learned that the older siblings had not attended school in over a year.
After being read her Miranda rights, Alfonso agreed to speak and told officers she was depressed, not taking her medication, and struggling to manage the household financially in connection to the alleged abuse from Rodriguez, according to the report.
Police said there was food in the home and the children did not appear to have visible injuries.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded after Alfonso began to experience a panic attack. Authorities said she was taken to Baptist Health Homestead Hospital, and once medically cleared, transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
Jail records show she faces one count of child neglect without great bodily harm.
She remained at TGK, where she was being held on a $3,000 bond as of Tuesday morning.
