FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A former manager at an assisted living facility in Coral Springs is facing a series of serious charges after investigators say she financially exploited an elderly resident under her care.
Jail records show Anita Hasnali, 35, is facing one count each of fraud, exploitation of an elderly or disabled adult, illegal use of credit cards and petit theft.
Court documents reveal the victim’s brother helps the 82-year-old woman manage her finances.
He noticed a long list of abnormal charges on her Costco credit card — charges the victim says she did not make.
Investigators say that from July 22 to Aug. 19, there were more than $2,600 in unauthorized purchases — far more than the $200 to $300 typically charged on the card.
Hasnali is accused of shopping in Plantation, Margate, Sunrise, Tamarac and Coral Springs.
Investigators said the case was initially handled by the Plantation Police Department, but the report also notes Coral Springs Police Department are conducting a separate investigation involving allegations related to the same victim.
Hasnali has no prior criminal history, according to officials.
Home Care Villas told Local 10 they are cooperating fully with those involved in the investigation.
In a statement, the facility said: “During this employee’s tenure with our facility, we have never observed or been made aware of any unethical behavior. We will allow the justice system to proceed as intended and will not be providing further comment at this time.”
A judge set Hasnali’s bond at more than $50,000. She was ordered to have no contact with the victim and is barred from working with elderly or disabled adults in any capacity while the case moves forward.
She remains at the Broward Main Jail as of Friday afternoon.
