Detectives received a complaint on Oct. 28 reporting that multiple horses on the 12200 block of 200th Street South appeared severely underweight or injured.

The following day, officers said they executed search warrants and found 10 horses in poor condition, with several suffering from severe malnutrition and untreated injuries.

Stalls were reportedly in unsanitary and unsafe conditions.

Authorities said eight of those horses were taken to Animal Care and Control for emergency veterinary care.

Veterinarians confirmed the animals suffered from malnutrition, untreated injuries, dental disease, dehydration, overgrown hooves, and in one case, a maggot-infested wound that required surgery. Two horses could not be secured at the time.

Based on the investigation, James Marinakis was arrested Friday and faces five counts of unlawful abandonment or confinement of an animal and three counts of aggravated animal cruelty.
