Miami Gardens officer opens fire on driver who nearly ran him over, chief says; manhunt underway

Shots fired in Miami Gardens confrontation with police

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — An urgent manhunt was underway Tuesday for a driver who got into a dangerous confrontation with Miami Gardens police.

Police said officers running radar on Northwest 22nd Avenue shot at a driver who nearly ran them over as they were conducting traffic enforcement.

The driver took off and later abandoned the vehicle in another area of the city. Officers were looking for the driver and others inside.

Miami Gardens Police Department Chief Delma Noel-Pratt described what happened.

“The vehicle accelerated. The first officer was able to get out of the way. The second officer was unable to get out of the way in time as the car was speeding towards him, at which time he discharged his firearm at the vehicle,” Noel-Pratt said. “The vehicle fled the scene again.”

Neither officer was hit and police believe the driver was involved in a hit-and-run crash that happened just down the road, prior to the confrontation.
