AfriKin opens “Scenes From Home” exhibition for Miami Art Week

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. — As Miami Art Week ramps up ahead of Art Basel, organizers of AfriKin have unveiled this year’s theme: “Scenes From Home,” a showcase designed to transport visitors to the home countries of the featured artists.

The exhibition, housed at the Scott Galvin Community Center, features nearly 200 works from about 60 artists representing African nations and the global African diaspora. Visitors are greeted with vivid, hand-crafted pieces that founder Alfonso Brooks says are meant to bridge cultures.

“By looking at this wall, you get to see South Africa without going there. You get to see Ghana. You get to see Nigeria. You get to see pieces of Egypt,” Brooks said.

Brooks, who has been planning the show since early 2025, brought in an outside curator for the first time. Joseph Underwood was tasked with helping shape the exhibition and bring Brooks’ vision to life.

“It’s not talking down at you. It’s not academic. The artists are here — it’s alive and it’s breathing,” Underwood said. “If you want to see contemporary art as it exists, this is the space.”

Underwood said he carefully placed each work throughout the venue to showcase its individuality and authenticity.

“I don’t want AI art. I don’t want something that’s a print from the store,” he said. “I want something someone handmade and signed. That’s what this show is going to bring for a lot of people.”

Brooks said the exhibit also offers a safe space for cultural exchange.

“You get to see the world without going there. We’re bringing the world to Miami,” he said.

The exhibition will remain open through the week. On Saturday, AfriKin will host additional programming, including a community workshop where visitors can work alongside fashion designers participating in next Sunday’s fashion show.
