‘When we fall, we get back up’: Performers band together to bring hurricane relief to Jamaica

Performers come together for Jamaica relief

SUNRISE, Fla. — On Friday, performers came together to send more relief to Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa tore through the island nation.

Vocalists in Sunrise sang in harmony and stood in solidarity with a mission to help people on the island as part of an organization called One Love Jamaica Rebuild Initiative.

“I’ve been there,” Carlene Davis-Cowan, with the One Love Jamaica Rebuild Initiative, said. “I’ve seen the devastation and it is a devastation beyond measure.”

Since October, recovering from the storm has been slow and painful for many.

However, the One Love Jamaica rebuild initiative is standing ready to assist.

“It’s all about Jamaica,” Kevin Downswell said. “It’s all about my country. We’ve been through so much the last six weeks. That’s why we’re here.”

This comprehensive relief operation comes at a critical time. Volunteers have already made a list of priorities: rebuild homes, deliver critical medical care, restore access to clean water and repair critical infrastructure in affected communities.

“We’re called to serve and this is a great opportunity to give back, not just to the general public but to give back to my community, my country, that’s been affected,” Davis-Cowan said.

The singers are using their voices to lift up those who need help the most.

“We are built to last,” Pastor Marion Hall, involved with the organization, said. “We’re not built to break. We are Jamaicans. My fellow Jamaicans, oh, when we fall, we get back up.”
