MIAMI — It’s been exactly two months and family members of activist Dwight Wells want to know why no one has been held accountable for his death.
That’s why his friends, family, and especially his mother, Mary Brown, held a rally on Wednesday to bring attention to the unsolved case.
“I’ll never lose hope when it comes to ‘Screamer’ Dwight Wells, I’ll never lose hope,” said Brown. “I’m going to be here until the end. I’m in for it the long haul.”
On Oct. 10, the 40-year-old Wells was shot and killed in front of his restaurant, Winning and Won Turkey Legs in Liberty City.
Surveillance video caught his final moments after the shooting.
Brown said people have been calling about who may have killed her son, but she’d rather hear it from police.
“The street is talking all kind(s) of stuff,” she said. “He’s dead. The guy that killed your son. All kind(s) of stuff you can hardly think running through your mind.”
Wells was the founder of “Bikes Up, Guns Down,” an organization created to help young people redirect their violence and choose positivity.
For Brown, because her son didn’t finish his work, she says she will continue it on the 10th of every month, outside of his business, until someone tells police who killed him.
“As the mother, I’m saying you out there, you know something, and I know that you know something because when I know something I’m going to tell something,” she said. “Why don’t you do the same for thing for us? Dwight didn’t deserve this. Not this way anyway.”
Brown said she appreciates the police for checking in on her and asking if she has heard anything.
Anyone with information is urged to call Miami police.
