MIAMI — A man accused of stealing a Ferrari and then crashing it into a light pole in Miami appeared in bond court on Wednesday.
Deshawn Prendergast, 28, of the Bronx, New York, is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $5,650 bond.
According to police, the crash involving the supercar occurred in the area of Southwest 12th Street and Second Avenue in the city of Miami.
“I was sitting there and all of my lights turned super bright and then everything just shut off and I was like, either we got struck by lightning – but it’s not raining, so that wouldn’t make sense – or someone hit a power line,“ Brickell resident Robert Brand said. ”And then obviously, I walked out onto my balcony, looked down and there’s a car hitting the power lines."
According to Miami Beach police, the victim contacted police early Tuesday morning and reported that two of her vehicles -- a 2024 Ferrari Purosangue and a 2025 Rolls-Royce Cullinan -- had been stolen.
Police said the victim told them a transportation company had picked up the luxury vehicles on Meridian Avenue and was supposed to transport them to a business, but several hours later, the business owner called her to tell her that the vehicles never arrived.
According to police, the victim told officers that the Ferrari was pinging in the area of Southwest Second Avenue and 17th Street in the city of Miami.
Miami police said officers responded to the area and saw the suspect entering the vehicle and taking off.
According to police, officers tried to pull over Prendergast, but the suspect fled before eventually losing control of the supercar and crashing into a police vehicle, as well as the light pole.
Local 10 cameras captured the bent power pole early Tuesday morning and linemen at the scene as well as Miami police officers.
“He did, in fact, surrender and they were able to safely apprehended him. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries,” Officer Kiara Delva said.
Police confirmed that the suspect was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital to be treated for a minor cut before he was booked into jail.
No other injuries were reported.
Miami Beach police confirmed that the Rolls-Royce was recovered elsewhere in Miami-Dade County.
Prendergast faces charges of grand theft of a vehicle, fleeing and eluding police, leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage and reckless driving.
