FLORIDA CITY, Fla. — Police in Florida City responded to reports of a shooting.
It happened Thursday afternoon along the 500 block of Northwest 15th Street.
According to police, officers responded to the scene and found a man who had been shot in the head.
The victim was taken by helicopter to Jackson South Medical Center in extremely critical condition, police said.
Witnesses told Local 10 News that they saw people in a vehicle start firing into a home, and one of those witnesses, Jonathan Osbun, said he stepped in to perform CPR on the victim while waiting for first responders.
One woman, who asked to not be idenitifed, said she was standing outside watching her grandchildren — some as young as 4 years old — and talking with a friend when the shooting began.
“The only thing I was thinking about was my grandkids and trying to get them to safety so we can run inside the house,” she said.
She said she saw the shooter fire from inside the moving vehicle.
“When I looked in the road, I could see the driver had the gun out — I could see the fire and everything coming from the gun,” she said.
According to FCPD, the victim was not expected to survive, so the investigation was turned over to the homicide bureau of the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
Officers did not immediately have any information regarding a possible suspect or person of interest.
The shooting marks at least the second incident of gun violence in Florida City this week. On Tuesday, a man was killed and another injured in a separate shooting just blocks away.
Neighbors described the man who was killed as well-liked and said the violence has left the community shaken.
“He didn’t bother nobody — he was mentally challenged,” one woman said of the recent victim. “They had no remorse.”
Anyone with information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
