A day after gunfire rang out in what residents described as a quiet Tamarac neighborhood, investigators say the shooting that killed 16-year-old Orlando Wedderburn began during a domestic incident inside his home.

“I looked out my window and saw a sea of blue lights,” said neighbor Bob Doptoglon.

The shooting happened at a home off Northwest 71st Avenue near 80th Court Wednesday.

Deputies said a woman was grazed by a bullet, but it was Wedderburn who was seen on surveillance video being treated by paramedics after neighbor Carlos Chirimos said the teen ran behind his truck before collapsing to the ground.

“I am not sure what he was trying to do,” said neighbor Carlos Chirimos. “If he was trying to get attention from the neighbor -- I’m not sure.”

Wedderburn was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died from his injuries, according to detectives.

Following the deadly shooting, investigators spent hours searching for clues, examining two parked cars outside the home and collecting evidence from inside.

“Something happened inside the house and I guess he was hit,” said Chirimos. “Very unfortunate for the family and it sucks to start that year.”

Detectives said the shooter remained on scene and was initially taken into custody, but was later released after claiming he fired in self-defense.

They said the woman who was grazed by a bullet is expected to be OK. The shooter is not facing charges at this time.

Investigators are still working to determine his relationship to the victim.
