Police said Onyechi fled from officers and entered a residential building located at 55 NE Fifth St.

Officers then searched the building for about an hour before finding Onyechi on the 14th floor, hiding inside a storage room, authorities said. According to a separate arrest report, Onyechi was wanted for an incident that occurred Tuesday night at the same building.

The report states that an officer was flagged down around 8:40 p.m. by building security after a man was seen trespassing in areas restricted to residents.

Police said the officer located Onyechi on the 15th floor in a secured common area and attempted to question him.

Investigators say Onyechi refused to provide his name or identifying information and claimed he had a girlfriend who lived in the building.

The officer then asked him to contact her and have her come to the common area, but police say after appearing to be calling someone, he suddenly stood up and began approaching the doorway where the officer was standing, authorities said.

According to the report, after ignoring commands to remain seated, Onyechi struck the officer in the neck and pushed him against a wall before fleeing down multiple flights of stairs. A perimeter was set up, and officers conducted a K-9 search while multiple fire alarms were activated throughout the building during the pursuit.

The report states that surveillance footage reviewed the following morning allegedly showed Onyechi tailgating residents into secured areas and following two women into an elevator, causing them to exit due to discomfort. Police said the women later locked themselves inside a residents-only room while the suspect remained nearby until an officer arrived.

After fleeing into the same building Wednesday evening, police said Onyechi activated fire alarms before being taken into custody.

Officers reported that he resisted arrest but was eventually detained and transported to the Miami Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit for questioning. Onyechi invoked his right to remain silent.

Miami PD: Man strikes officer after entering restricted area of downtown high-rise A 36-year-old man is facing multiple charges after a violent confrontation earlier this week with a Miami police officer inside a downtown residential high-rise, according to an arrest affidavit obtained Thursday by Local 10 News.

Jail records show Onyechi faces several charges, including battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, resisting without violence, loitering or prowling, and false fire alarm activation.

Onyechi appeared in court Thursday, where a judge set his bond at $8,600 and ordered him to stay away from high-rise apartment complex.

Court records indicate Onyechi has prior arrests involving resisting officers and a previous trespassing incident in 2023 in which police say he made women uncomfortable at a gym and refused to identify himself to police.

Local 10 News also reported that he was accused of stalking victims at an apartment complex in Brickell back in October 2022.

In that case, one of the victims told Local 10 News at the time that she had several chilling encounters with Onyechi, including one in which police said he forced his way inside the victim’s apartment building and began following her toward one of the complex’s elevators.
