According to an arrest report from the Miami Police Department, officers were dispatched to the area of Northwest Second Avenue and 32nd Street on the night of Dec. 19 about a vehicle that had crashed into a pole.

The person who called 911 also advised that they heard about three gunshots near the scene of the crash.

When officers arrived, they found a man, identified as Donoven Patterson, in a black Chevy Malibu with a gunshot wound to his back.

He was then transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.

According to the arrest report, during the course of the investigation, detectives discovered that prior to the shooting, Patterson’s mother, Carmen Patterson, 47, had gone to the 3800 block of Northwest Second Avenue where she punched a woman in the face, unprovoked.

The two women fought for about two minutes before being separated, authorities said.

According to the report, the victim told detectives that she and Carmen Patterson have had issues for nearly a decade over a deceased man who they used to both date.

Police said both Carmen Patterson and her son pulled out guns from their vehicle after the fight and fired into a large crowd, in the direction of the victim.

Surveillance video from a nearby business shows Donoven Patterson falling to the ground at one point and crawling out of frame with help from his mother, authorities said.

As of Tuesday, police have not confirmed whether they know who shot Donoven Patterson or whether he will face charges in connection with the incident.

Police said Carmen Patterson was taken into custody Monday and invoked her right to counsel.

She faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, using a firearm while committing a felony, aggravated assault with a firearm, criminal mischief, battery and unlawful discharge of a firearm in a public place.

As of Tuesday morning, Carmen Patterson was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Online jail records listed her bond as “to be set.”
