SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. — Authorities arrested a woman on grand theft auto and drug charges after they said she ordered a Lyft ride from a South Miami store and then took the driver’s car herself after distracting him.
Police said it all happened just after 8:45 p.m. Monday.
Investigators with the South Miami Police Department said that a Lyft driver went to the Family Dollar at 5978 SW 64th St. to pick up a woman, later identified as Lindsey Chrystyn Josefsberg.
Police said Josefsberg, 37, of southwest Miami-Dade, asked the driver for help loading her bags into the Honda Accord. They said as he walked around to the back of the car, she went up front, got in the driver’s seat and took off in the sedan.
But authorities wouldn’t have a hard time tracking her down, according to an arrest report, because the driver’s cellphone was still inside. Police said his girlfriend came and helped authorities trace it down using Find my iPhone.
It turned out, authorities said, that Josefsberg drove home. The driver’s cellphone pinged to her address in the 10500 block of Southwest 66th Terrace in the unincorporated Sunset area, police said.
Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies went to the home and found the Honda, according to police; a deputy who saw Josefsberg get into the car with others then conducted a traffic stop.
Police said Josefsberg admitted “she stole the vehicle,” but her problems with the law didn’t end there. MDSO deputies said they found a “pink glass pipe” with suspected cocaine residue in her purse, along with a 0.5 mg suspected Xanax pill.
Deputies also said that Josefsberg wasn’t supposed to be driving any vehicle ― stolen or not ― to begin with. They said her license has been suspended for more than two years.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Josefsberg was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $5,150 bond.
