MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — In honor of American Heart Month, Miami-Dade County Public Schools hosted their third annual CPR Day Saturday, giving students and members of the community hands-on training in life-saving techniques.
Barbara Goleman Senior High School served as the site for the event, which organizers say helps participants learn how to respond in emergencies.
According to the American Red Cross, about 70% of Americans have never been trained in CPR. Organizers say programs like this give students and families a chance to be prepared and potentially save a life.
“We are giving someone a chance when we prepare in advance,” said Ashley Rasmussen, a physical education teacher at Homestead Senior High School.
One participant, Tiffany Graver-Smith, said CPR classes were instrumental in saving her 8-year-old son after he passed out in a pool a few months ago.
“If it weren’t for knowing, I don’t know if we would be standing here today,” she said.
