“It was scary and it was very sad,” Barbara Auguste said.

Auguste has lived in the home in the 2900 block of Buttonwood Avenue with her husband for more than 30 years.

She said they rarely, if ever, have used the heating system but during the bitter cold snap, she asked her husband to turn the heat on for the first time in years and less than five minutes later, they started to see white smoke.

“I said where is the smoke coming from? Five minutes later we heard something say, ‘Boom’ and he thought somebody hit his car,” Auguste said. “So he opened the door and came out to look and he saw the roof was on fire. He ran back in and said, ‘Barbara! Call 911!’”

With help on the way, Auguste says she, her husband and their dog ran out as fast as they could.

“I ran out of the house without shoes, without everything,” she said.

Auguste says she’s grateful they are OK, but she cherishes all the memories they have made living in this home.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “It was just so unreal.”

The state fire marshal was investigating the exact cause of the fire. Auguste said in the meantime, she and her husband will stay with her son while they figure out what to do next.
