Multi-agency raid shuts down Hialeah café, 14 arrested

Authorities shut down Hialeah café in joint operation, 14 taken into custody

MIAMI — A multi-agency operation shut down a Hialeah business that investigators say was operating without a proper license and posed a danger to public safety.

Authorities closed La Lunita Cafe following what officials called Operation Luna, carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Hialeah Police Department, Department of Homeland Security and other agencies.

A notice posted on the door by the City of Hialeah said the conduct of the business constituted an emergency involving serious danger to public health, safety and welfare.

Investigators arrested 14 people during the operation, including three taken into custody by ICE. Those arrested included the manager, assistant manager and servers, and some arrests were tied to outstanding warrants.

Authorities said about 35 people were inside the café during the raid, where a live DJ was performing. Investigators also said an on-site security guard was selling or distributing drugs. Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco officers removed four gaming machines from the location.

The shutdown comes about a month after a Jan. 11 shooting at the business in which a man was shot in the leg. Police previously said the suspect in that case was arrested while trying to return to Cuba.

Neighbors declined to speak on camera, with several saying they are friends with the people who own and operate the café.
