MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 25-year-old student was arrested Tuesday after authorities said he brought a gun onto the campus of D. A. Dorsey Technical College in Miami-Dade.
Miami-Dade Schools Police identified the suspect in an arrest report obtained by Local 10 News Wednesday as Johnbilly Forestal.
According to the report, officers were notified that a teacher reported seeing a black gun inside a women’s restroom at the school, located at 7100 NW 17th Ave.
The report stated that police attempted to review surveillance video but were unable to because the cameras were “inoperable.”
An officer then began searching students’ belongings in a classroom after explaining the search was a safety check “based on reasonable suspicion that someone might be in possession of a gun.”
Authorities said Forestal was later found with a silver Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum revolver that was inside a green and orange Nickelodeon backpack.
Investigators said he knowingly entered the school campus with the gun.
They said a MDSPD detective responded to the campus, took over the investigation, and impounded the weapon.
After being read his Miranda rights, Forestal spontaneously told detectives that he had the gun for protection and knew he shouldn’t have had it at the school, the report stated.
Forestal was then taken into custody on one count of possession of a firearm on school property.
As of Wednesday, he was being held on a $2,500 bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
A spokesperson with Miami-Dade County Public Schools told Local 10 in a statement that the matter was “handled quickly.”
"Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is aware of the arrest of an individual in possession of a weapon at D.A. Dorsey Technical College. The matter was handled quickly by Miami-Dade Schools Police, and there is no ongoing threat to the school or the surrounding community," the statement read. "The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority, and we are committed to maintaining a secure learning environment. We encourage everyone to “See Something, Say Something” and report any suspicious activity promptly."
