Online jail records show Carlton Devdre Fortham, 29, was booked into the Broward County Main Jail Tuesday on a second-degree attempted murder charge.

According to a police report from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, the shooting occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on July 31, 2025, in the parking lot of the Wawa gas station, located at 6191 NW Ninth Ave.

Police said the victim was found near his vehicle with a gunshot wound to his leg, while Fortham was found unconscious, lying next to his vehicle with a gunshot wound to the eye.

According to the report, the shooting was captured on surveillance video and shows the two men having brief contact near Fortham’s vehicle before the victim walks away from the car, abruptly stops and then turns around.

Police said Fortham was in his vehicle at this point, so he couldn’t be seen on video, however the video shows that the victim gets shot once in his leg before he shoots back at Fortham, striking him in the eye.

According to the report, the victim told detectives that he was at the gas station, checking the pumps for his stickers promoting his junk car towing business, when Fortham, who was in a white BMW, asked him, “What are you doing to my car?”

The victim said he told Fortham he was just checking the pumps for his stickers and then saw that Fortham had a gun on his lap.

According to the report, the victim tried to “fist bump” Fortham to “be like, we are good,” but Fortham warned him that he had a gun.

The victim said he told Fortham that he had a gun on him too and then began walking away from the car.

He said he then heard Fortham say, “You’re f***ing dead,” at which time he turned around because he “wasn’t going to get shot in the back.”

According to the report, the victim then saw Fortham raise his gun and point it in his direction before shooting him in the leg.

The victim said he then fired back at the car before limping back to his truck.

As of Wednesday morning, Fortham remained jailed without bond.
