MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 62-year-old man from southwest Miami-Dade was arrested Monday on accusations that he was hosting cock-fighting events at his property, authorities said.
According to an arrest report from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the property in the 24400 block of Southwest 123rd Avenue Monday morning to execute a search warrant after receiving reports that the property was serving as a cock-fighting location.
Deputies said they encountered Leonardo Cabrera, who is the property owner, and detained him as they continued to investigate.
According to the report, deputies found a gun on the property, and as Cabrera is a convicted felon, he is not permitted to be in possession of any firearms or ammunition.
Deputies said they also found several “game fowl roosters” individually caged, and specified in the arrest report that game fowl roosters are male roosters, specifically trained for fighting.
An enclosed cock-fighting training ring was also discovered within the structure, along with rooster vitamins, medications and a rooster agitator, as well as syringes.
A deceased rooster was found still housed in a cage, authorities said.
According to the report, 10 dogs were also found on the property, individually caged, with urine and feces in the entire base of the cage with no accessible food.
Cabrera invoked his right to remain silent, authorities said.
He was arrested on charges of breeding/possessing animals to fight, animal cruelty with the intent to injure or kill and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
As of Tuesday morning, Cabrera was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Online jail records listed his bond as “to be set.”
