Residents push back against proposed Hollywood Beach 20-story condo

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Residents in Hollywood Beach are at odds with how the city wants to transform its community city along South Ocean Drive.

The city has an agreement with a developer to make upgrades to the center and the park nearby, but residents aren’t happy about what could come with it.

It’s all part of a public, private partnership that the city says would cost them nothing except for some of the land to build a condo tower more than 20 stories tall.

But the way forward for this project has to do with something many of us don’t think about on a regular basis, and that’s zoning.

Is the proposed area zoned properly for this project?

The Broward County Planning Council met Thursday to discuss that.

They busted out maps from 1977 and 1989. Staff with the planning council say the property is supposed to be zoned ‘community,’ which means no condo tower, but the city of Hollywood says those maps show something different.

Hollywood Mayor Josh Levy said the area is already zoned ‘residential’ and the project should move forward.

A few dozen residents showed up to that meeting.

Many of them said the community center and the park need upgrades, but the location is not the spot for a condo tower.

They felt it would create worse population density issues, among other problems.
