MIAMI — A Miami man is facing a felony charge after police said he went berserk on a Lyft driver downtown after misplacing his cellphone, “jumping through” the window of a Tesla to attack him after they met to get the victim his misplaced cellphone back.

According to the Miami Police Department, the attack happened on Dec. 23. Officers said the victim reported the attack a week later.

An MPD report states that the Lyft driver picked up a man and a woman and successfully drove them to their destination. Police said the two contacted him later and said they left their cellphone in his Tesla.

According to the report, they agreed to meet at 888 Biscayne Blvd., near the Kaseya Center, to retrieve the phone.

Authorities said upon meeting, the driver got into a dispute with one of the passengers, later identified as Schadrec Chaparro, 40, of Wynwood. Police said the driver, who primarily speaks Chinese, had a hard time understanding what the argument was about.

Police said Tesla cameras captured Chaparro “jumping through the open driver’s side window and entering the vehicle without permission.”

“The victim stated that (Chaparro) climbed on top of him while he was seated in the drivers seat and began punching him multiple times in the face” before running away with the woman, the report states.

The victim reported that Chaparro’s blows caused him “significant injury” and he had the hospital records to prove it, according to police.

According to police, investigators were able to identify Chaparro because besides a cellphone and damage to the vehicle, he also left behind his Hard Rock Unity loyalty card with his name and serial number.

The report states that officers found Chaparro at an Allapattah apartment on Wednesday afternoon. They said during an interview, he “confessed to entering the vehicle without permission with the intent to retrieve the cell phone” but claimed his companion prevented him from punching the rideshare driver.

“He denied intentionally striking the victim and implied that any injury may have occurred while he was climbing into the vehicle,” investigators wrote. “He further stated that he was intoxicated at the time and cannot fully remember the events.”

Police arrested Chaparro on charges of burglary with assault or battery, a first-degree felony, and misdemeanor criminal mischief.

As of Thursday, he was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with a bond listed as “to be set” in online jail records.
