Smoke continues to rise days after northwest Miami-Dade warehouse fire

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Smoke is still rising from a warehouse in northwest Miami-Dade days after a massive fire tore through the building.

A Miami-Dade sheriff’s deputy stayed at the entrance Sunday while crews continued working at the site.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue gave Local 10 News an inside look at the damage as firefighters sprayed water on hot spots. Crews also used an aerial crane to try and put down the smoke still coming from the building.

Large piles of debris still remain on the property as cleanup continues. Heavy machinery is being used to move wreckage and clear the site.

Sky 10 video showed the extent of the destruction, with the roof collapsed and parts of the exterior walls caved in.

The fire broke out Thursday, prompting a big response that brought about 200 firefighters to the warehouse in northwest Miami-Dade.

Thick smoke from the blaze could be seen for miles.

“This is a large commercial warehouse with significant fire and the structure is compromised,” a fire official said at the scene.

A resident identified only as Sherrill lives across the street from the warehouse, and thought the fire could spread to her home of 30 years.

“I’m glad it didn’t come this way,” she said. “Like I said, we have gas, and things could’ve went ... the whole area could’ve just been terrible.”

According to records, the building is largely occupied by a company called Global Warehouse Solutions.

The 500,000-square-foot warehouse stored items, including deodorant, shampoo, AstroTurf and other goods.

Some small business owners who used the facility for storage say they lost everything in the fire.

“I don’t have nothing to go back to,” one business owner said.

What remains of the building is expected to be demolished at some point, but crews still have significant work ahead as they continue putting out hot spots and clearing smoke from the site.
