ISLAMORADA, Fla. — Sheriff’s deputies in the Florida Keys arrested a now-former firefighter and paramedic on Wednesday after accusing him of stealing fentanyl from an ambulance.
A news release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office describes Brian Keith Burt as “formerly employed with the Islamorada Fire Rescue Department.”
Burt, 45, of Key Largo, got on investigators’ radar on March 2 after his superiors notified deputies that he “obtained a partially used vial of fentanyl from an ambulance after a medical call and forged another paramedic’s signature in documents related to the disposal of the drug,” the release states.
MCSO spokesperson Adam Linhardt said that Burt’s colleagues “noticed discrepancies in the documentation related to the drug’s use after the call.”
Burt is now facing charges of grand theft of a controlled substance and fraud.
