DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — Dozens of people waving the pre-revolution Iranian flag -- the one with the lion and sun -- gathered in Deerfield Beach on Sunday.
Many in the crowd are Iranian Americans who say they believe the country is closer than ever to freedom.
“To the young people that are such strong voices and they have such strong opinions, please listen to Iranians,” said Iranian American Sandra Madjdi. “There’s a loud voice out right now trying to come out, and every voice is obviously needed right now.”
Kia Behravan, a local medical student, said the car rally helped him feel more connected to family members back in Iran.
“And people in Iran, from what I’m hearing from family back there, they’re not so much worried about the bombs, but about the bombs stopping,” Behravan said. “To them and to the whole community, this is not a war. This is a rescue mission.”
Participants said the rally was meant to show solidarity with many Iranians who want the country’s current government to come to an end.
Drivers decorated their cars with American and Iranian flags before cruising down A1A, ending the rally in Fort Lauderdale.
Many also voiced support for Reza Pahlavi, the eldest son of Iran’s last shah, who has been living in exile since the Iranian Revolution.
Pahlavi has said he is ready to help guide Iran through a transition to a new government.
Meanwhile, the conflict involving Iran has stretched into a fourth week, with the country threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz if the United States targets Iranian energy infrastructure.
The waterway is one of the most important routes for global oil shipments.
Pahlavi has also recently urged the United States and Israel to avoid striking civilian infrastructure and focus only on targets tied to the Iranian regime.
While the future of Iran remains uncertain, many of the people who gathered Sunday said they remain hopeful that change is coming.
