MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A trailer park fire in northwest Miami-Dade displaced several residents overnight Wednesday.
It broke out just after midnight at the Rovell Mobile Home Park, located at 939 NW 81st St. in the county’s unincorporated West Little River area.
Residents said the fire grew within seconds, engulfing several mobile homes.
“I was sitting in my bedroom, watching ‘Magnum P.I.’ ― the 80s version,” resident Pat Malone said. " I smell smoke, so I got my clothes on, my shoes real fast. I was getting ready to get out of there and the police broke my door down."
The massive blaze is believed to have started in the park’s laundry room.
Lourdes Sanchez tearfully recalled her reaction as the trailer she’s owned for nine years went up in flames.
“I first thought of my tenants,” she said in Spanish. “That I would not find out that someone had been burned. That’s what I prayed for.
“I need to relocate them,” she added.
Malone said she received minor burns, a small price to pay for escaping with her life.
“Well, I made it out,” she said.
She said the fire was an unwelcome gift, however: She just recently retired.
“I’m still waiting for my first partial paycheck,” Malone said.
Another resident said he lost all of his personal items.
A spokesperson for the American Red Cross said the organization helped nine residents displaced by the fire.
Officials with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said they’re working to determine its cause.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by Sanchez.
