KEY WEST, Fla. — Key West police say video of a man shooting a rooster in a park Friday morning “garnered community outrage as it circulated on social media.” They say the suspect turned himself in Friday afternoon to face an animal cruelty charge.
Authorities said Gregory Wayne Tolan, 66, shot the rooster at Bayview Park.
According to a Facebook post by the Key West Police Department, a witness at the park, located at at 1320 Truman Ave., recorded Tolan “walking away from the writhing bird holding a rifle.“
“The video shows a rooster on the ground moving erratically and appearing to be suffering with what appeared to be blood present,” police said. “The witness told officers that the male walked through the neighborhood while carrying the rifle and during this time, the witness encountered another individual who identified Tolan.”
Authorities said they obtained a warrant for Tolan’s arrest within five hours.
He turned himself in at the Monroe County Detention Center, where police said he was being held on a $25,000 bond.
