Officials with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said a deputy shot Cournelious Comer, 15, after responding to a gun threat call at JL (Joe) and Enid W. Demps Park at 11350 SW 216th St., in the county’s Goulds area.

MDSO officials said the deputy encountered four people and opened fire after a confrontation nearby in the 11200 block of Southwest 220th Terrace. According to an arrest report, Comer was running away when he fell and flipped over with the gun in his hand pointed at deputies.

The sheriff’s office shared a picture of the gun they said they recovered at the scene.

“We’re just grateful that nobody else got hurt and that he is in stable condition,” MDSO Assistant Sheriff Fernand Charles said. “We need to make sure that we’re mindful of what our children are doing day in and day out, because it is 3:30 in the afternoon, a 15-year-old is walking around with a firearm, which is not legal or acceptable.”

Family members of Comer dispute that account and claim the deputy never identified himself.

“I don’t know about no firearms or whatever,” aunt Asia Spann said. “He didn’t shoot no firearms, shoot at the police, you know, to my understanding, but why did they just jump out and unknown cause, they just start shooting? That’s what I want to know.”

Aside from Comer, deputies also arrested 17-year-old Phil Phillips. Both he and Comer are facing felony charges.
