Fort Lauderdale commissioners discuss $268 million proposal for new city hall

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Fort Lauderdale’s old city hall was badly damaged by flooding in 2023.

On Tuesday, commissioners will vote on whether to sign an interim agreement with the developer behind their proposed new building.

That developer came up with a futuristic design, and it comes with a hefty price tag.

The big question for city leaders is whether to spend $268 million on a new construction or spend less on an older existing building in the city.

Commissioner Ben Sorensen told Local 10’s Aaron Maybin the new building will cost tax payers $24 million a year, adding up to around $724 million over the next three decades.

He wanted to delay Tuesday’s vote to find other options.

Commissioner Steven Glassman, meanwhile, said he supports building a new city hall.

“The choice tonight is really whether or not we are going to move forward with something that meets our needs, and we have them really buttoned down,” said Glassman. “Or are we just going to go into the future and guess what those costs are going to be. I’m not one to guess on what the future might bring us on this structure. I want to make sure that we know exactly what is going to happen.”
