HOMESTEAD, Fla. — The Homestead Police Department is addressing a concerning video circulating online that appears to show one of its officers in a marked patrol car allegedly racing another driver.
Police say the clip shows a red sports car and a marked Homestead police vehicle stopped at a traffic light. The driver of the sports car recorded the interaction using a 360-degree camera mounted on the back of the vehicle.
In the video, there appears to be a brief verbal exchange between the driver and the officer. The driver claimed the officer asked, “if I wanna run it,” suggesting a race. The driver wrote in a caption that they initially thought the officer was joking, but then the patrol car sped off. The sports car attempts to follow but cannot keep up.
“The biggest reason we put out the press release is to make sure that not everyone paints the picture that this is what the Homestead Police Department does,” said Oscar Roque, the department’s public information officer.
Homestead police say Internal Affairs is now investigating the incident, including who was behind the wheel of the patrol car.
Roque said he does not have details on whether the officer or the driver has been identified.
“At this moment, I’m not privy to that information because our professional compliance bureau replies directly to the chief, and once the chief gets all the information and makes a decision as to who, what, when, where, why and outcome when it comes to that situation,” he said.
There is no timeline for when the investigation will be complete. The department says appropriate action will be taken based on the findings and that updates will be provided once a conclusion is reached.
