MIAMI — A man who was accused of shooting at a Miami police officer will now spend the next 15 years of his life behind bars after he accepted a plea deal in connection with the incident.
Antranard Womble, 30, of North Miami Beach, was in court on Monday, facing the officer he shot at six years prior.
Officer Erica Socarras tried to pull him over on Northwest 50th Street, in the Liberty City neighborhood, in April 2020 when Womble, then 24, opened fire hitting her unmarked car several times.
Socarras, who was on board with the plea, said in a victim impact statement she was ambushed and has been living with anxiety.
She told the court and Womble she was a target and had to fight for her life.
“While everything was happening, all I could think was, ‘I can’t die today. I need to make it home to my kids,’” Socarras said.
Miami Police Department Chief Manny Morales was there with several other officers in support of Socarras.
“Six years ago, she got ready for work, put on her uniform, and ready to do what every officer does each and every day: go out there and protect and serve our community as they’ve sworn to do,” he said. “And on that day, Mr. Womble mercilessly and coldly attempted to take her life for simply doing her job. Fully aware of what was happening, there was an unmarked vehicle, but it had police lights.”
After court, someone connected to Womble became upset in the hallway, shouting expletives at police officers.
There are two other defendants facing charges in this case. Those cases remain open.
